Overnight lane restrictions scheduled on I-10 near Benson beginning Sunday

SAFFORD — Motorists traveling east on Interstate 10 near Benson will be restricted to one lane on four consecutive evenings beginning Sunday, January 30 to allow delivery of materials needed to begin straightening the freeway west of State Route 90.
The overnight closures had been scheduled for this past week, but the arrival of materials was delayed.
Closures of the median lane of eastbound I-10 are now scheduled from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday night. The posted speed limit will be 55 miles per hour during the restrictions.
Materials delivered during those evenings will be used to construct temporary lanes for westbound I-10 traffic for about two miles west of the interchange of I-10 and SR 90. The temporary lanes will be adjacent to the median and will accommodate westbound traffic when the Arizona Department of Transportation begins work to straighten the curves west of the interchange.
The work is part of ADOT's $27.6 million project to replace the traffic interchange at I-10 and SR 90 near Benson and straighten the freeway. The project began in the fall of 2010 and is expected to be complete in 2012.
As always, drivers are reminded to proceed though the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
