Lane closures on Interstate 10 at State Route 90 junction beginning Tuesday

Morning lane closures will allow delivery of steel to support new bridge columns

June 16, 2011

Lane closures are planned on Interstate 10 at the State Route 90 junction on Tuesday (June 21) and Wednesday (June 22) to allow the delivery of steel shafts that will support the concrete columns for the north half of the new overpass to be built at the Cochise County interchange.

Motorists traveling on I-10 near Benson can expect the following restrictions next week:

  • The right lane of westbound I-10 will be closed from 7 a.m. until noon on Tuesday (June 21) for one mile west of the SR 90 interchange.
  • The left lane of eastbound I-10 will be closed from 7 a.m. until noon on Wednesday (June 22) for one mile west of the SR 90 interchange.

The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph in the restricted area on both days.

ADOT crews have been drilling shafts for the new columns this week and will pour the concrete columns after the steel shafts are in place.

The work is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s two-year, $27.6 million project to replace the existing overpass at I-10 and SR 90 and remove curves from westbound I-10 west of the interchange near Benson.

Crews also began pouring the concrete for the new westbound alignment of I-10 this week, a process that is expected to take about one month to complete. The new lanes are located north of the existing westbound lanes and that work will not affect motorists.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
