As construction of roadway improvements in Gila Bend moves forward, Arizona Department of Transportation crews are scheduled to demolish the bridge at Business Route 8 (B-8) and State Route 85 (Pima St.) next week.
Beginning Monday (Oct. 24) at 6 a.m., crews will use a jackhammer to demolish the all-concrete bridge, which was originally built in 1960. Bridge demolition work is scheduled to be completed by Tuesday evening (Oct. 25).
The bridge is no longer needed since the current $13 million improvement project includes building a new, elevated intersection. The elevated intersection will remove the tall truck restriction on SR 85 and create a safer, more efficient intersection that accommodates all vehicles.
Traffic is not expected to be impacted during the demolition work.
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
