The Arizona Department of Transportation is currently working on the proposed roadway design for State Route 86, approximately 26 miles west of Robles Junction, in Pima County. The project area extends from approximately mile posts 123.9 - 128.8 and is located entirely within the Tohono O'odham Nation. SR 86 serves as a recreational and commercial route between Tucson and southwestern Arizona, carrying a high percentage of trucks and recreational vehicles. It is also an oversize load route for vehicles bypassing Phoenix via SR 85 and SR 86. Many motorists use SR 86 to access the Organ Pipe National Monument and recreational destinations in Mexico. The estimated cost of this improvement project is $10,700,000.
Proposed Improvements
- Enhancing SR 86 to a width of 40-ft (two 12-ft lanes and two 8-ft shoulders).
- Upgrading the intersection of SR 86 and San Isidro Road at MP 127.5 to feature an eastbound left turn lane and a westbound right turn lane.
- The project will complement an adjacent project being designed concurrently to the east, SR 86, Santa Rosa Section (MP 128.8 to MP 132.8), and tie into another adjacent project being designed concurrently to the west of MP 123.9.
