Paving planned for State Route 86 improvement project west of Robles Junction

August 1, 2012

The Arizona Department of Transportation will continue paving State Route 86 west of Robles Junction starting Thursday, August 2, as part of the SR 86 San Pedro Segment improvement project.

What to Expect

  • From 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, Thursday, Aug. 2 through Friday Aug. 10, one lane of the roadway will remain open and crews will direct traffic through the work zone.

    * Drivers can expect to see more workers and equipment than usual during paving operations and should proceed through the work zone with special caution.

    * Traffic delays will vary, but should not exceed 15 minutes.

  • From 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 13 through Sept. 4, no lane closures are anticipated as crews work along the roadway shoulder. Drivers should proceed carefully through the work zone and watch for equipment and crews.
  • No work is planned on Labor Day (Monday September 3).
  • A future traffic alert will notify drivers of resumed paving operations to begin after Sept. 4.

The work is part of a four-mile long road improvement project on the Tohono O’odham Nation between San Pedro and Viopuli Road (MP 137 and MP 141). This $6 million project includes expanding the roadway shoulders for enhanced safety, applying a new, smooth driving surface and installing drainage features along the project area. The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2012.

The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph in the work zone during non-work hours. Shoulders are restricted. Drivers are cautioned to stay on the roadway and obey the speed limit.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to a variety of reasons, including weather, material availability and mechanical difficulties. ADOT advises drivers to proceed through or near work zones with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
