Heavy rains during the winter of 2010 damaged sections of the roadway and retaining walls along State Route 88, the historic Apache Trail. The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration are working to repair the highway between the Fish Creek Hill rest area and Apache Lake. The work includes the repair or replacement of five retaining walls and the replacement of one section of the roadway.
