Sierra Vista - Bisbee Highway Improvement Project

State Route 92 ~ Carr Canyon Road to Hunter Canyon

Purpose of Project

On October 15, 2008, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) began roadway construction on Sierra Vista – Bisbee Highway - State Route (SR) 92 between Carr Canyon Road and Hunter Canyon to widen the roadway for improved traffic flow and safety.

SR 92 will be widened for approximately four miles, from Carr Canyon Road on the north to Hunter Canyon on the south. The construction is expected to last 18 months with a completion planned for the spring of 2010.

Roadway improvements include:

  • The road will be widened to five lanes. Two lanes in each direction with a center left turn lane, and an 8 foot shoulder on each side of the roadway.
  • Curb, gutter and raised median will be place on SR 92 north and south of the Hereford Road intersection.
  • Hereford Road will extend to the west to provide a new access to the U.S. Post Office.
  • A traffic signal and crosswalks will be placed at Hereford Road and SR 92.

Traveling in the Construction Area
  • The construction zone is four miles in length. Motorists are advised to use caution and watch for construction personnel, public safety officers and bicyclists, and to obey all posted speed limit signs and detour routes while traveling through the construction area.
  • One lane of traffic in each direction on SR 92 will remain open during the hours of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, weekends and holidays unless special construction is warranted.
  • Nighttime restrictions may occur to maintain the construction schedule.
  • Please note that by State and County statutes, bicycles can use the travel lanes in a roadway, and bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. At various times throughout the construction, for the safety of the public and construction personnel, the shoulder of the roadway will be closed. To avoid these road restrictions, bicyclists may wish to access alternative routes.

Project History

The design of the SR 92 from Carr Canyon to Hunter Canyon improvement project began in fall 2002. From fall 2005 to fall 2006, a public meeting and several small group meetings were held for businesses, homeowners and the general public to provide input on the design of the roadway improvements.

The public meeting was held as an open house, with maps and displays for viewing. Representatives from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the project team were available to answer questions, and attendees were encouraged to fill out comment forms. The meeting was publicized through advertisements placed in area newspapers, news releases sent to area media and fliers posted in public places.

Additionally, an invitation was mailed to businesses, homeowners and other interested stakeholders. Once the design was completed, the project went through the process of preparing for construction, which included going to bid. After Bison Contracting was awarded the project in August 2008, the construction schedule was established.
