Upcoming Arizona Freeway Sign Update Projects

Arizona uses reflective backgrounds and legend on all new regulatory, warning, marker, and guide signs, including large freeway guide signs. The reflective sheeting on these signs eventually diminishes in effectiveness over time, so periodic replacement of signs is necessary.
Arizona has developed a statewide program of periodically replacing signs on freeways. This program permits ADOT to maintain safe and effective signing on all the state's freeways. The average freeway will undergo a complete sign update approximately every 10-15 years. This program is funded 95% by Federal funds, and 5% by State funds.
The scope of a typical sign update project is as follows:
- Change and update sign legends to meet the needs of changing and growing communities along Arizona freeways
- Replace regulatory, warning, marker, and guide signs along freeway mainline through the project limits
- Replace regulatory, warning, marker, and guide signs on ramps and crossroads within the project limits
- Replace or improve sign installations that do not meet current standards for height, lateral offset, and location
- Replace sign posts and foundations that do not meet current structural and crashworthiness standards
- Relocate exit signs to reduce the possibility of damage by errant drivers
