Construction of the section of Loop 101 known as the Agua Fria Freeway first began in 1985, after Maricopa County voters approved Proposition 300, which established a 20 year half-cent sales tax to construct Valley freeways.
Today, Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) is a six lane highway extending north from Interstate 10 (I-10) and west to Interstate 17 (I-17). Loop 101 is an integral part of the Valley freeway system and serves as the link between these two Interstate highways that are important routes for transportation and commerce.

Our Valley Freeway System is part of the 2004 voter-approved Regional Transportation Plan. We are working hard with our transit partners to implement the voters’ vision and are committed to quality, safety, open communication with our neighbors, and minimal inconvenience to the traveling public.
