State Route 801 East ~ Loop 303 to Loop 202

Study Overview Closures & Restrictions

State Route (SR) 801 is a proposed east/west freeway in western Maricopa County. It would connect existing SR 85 to the proposed Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway), with a connection to the proposed Loop 303. This is one of several projects associated with voter approval of the Regional Transportation Plan and is designed to improve traffic flow throughout the Valley. SR 801 is currently being studied in two sections. More . . .

Study Timeline

The timeline represents the required steps in the development of a roadway or roadway improvement. In addition to establishing a funding source, there are a series of required planning and environmental studies before a roadway is constructed.

Study Timeline

Study Funding
The portion of the State Route 801 Study project is funded with the half-cent sales tax under the voter-approved Proposition 400.

Study Planning - Overview
The goal of the planning stage is to establish the projects feasibility. Feasibility is studied from both an engineering and environmental perspective. Both studies are conducted simultaneously and collaberatively. More . . .

Design and Right of Way
If the engineering and environmental studies both recommend constructing one of the alternatives studied, then the project will transition into the design phase. This typically is done in two parts, with both parts including numerous technical reviews for compliance with design standards. First, the preliminary engineering documents are completed. This level of design is sufficient to define the right of way requirements so that right of way acquisition can begin. The second level, or final design, is sufficiently detailed for a contractor to bid the project. More . . .

Construction
This project is currently funded for construction in the years 2023 to 2025. These dates could be advanced with approval from the local governments and the MAG Regional Council.

Improvements

Because this would be a new freeway, no improvements are currently scheduled to the proposed freeway after its initial construction. However, provisions are being made in the design to accommodate future improvements, such as median High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV or carpool) lanes and ramps and future freeway connections.
