Project Overview

SR 87 (Duthie-Martin Highway) is a state highway that starts in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area and heads north into Gila County. There are a large volume of recreational travelers and tourists that use SR 87 to travel to Arizona Rim Country and to nearby lakes and recreation areas.

Current SR 87 Activity:

SR 87 (Duthie-Martin Highway) – Pavement Preservation Project

New rubberized asphalt pavement on SR 87 between Shea Boulevard and Gilbert Road will offer a smoother ride for drivers. A project to apply a new rubberized asphalt roadway and miscellaneous pavement repairs began on September 21 and is anticipated to be completed by late October 2009.

Travel had been reduced to one lane in each direction throughout the 6.6 mile project, as the new surface was milled and paved. Travelers may experience intermittent lane restrictions as workers repair guardrail and the new roadway is permanently striped.

SR 87 (Duthie-Martin Highway) – New Four Peaks Road to Dos S Ranch Road Reconstruction and Erosion Control Project

The project is a construction design process for two segments of the roadway north of the recently completed SR 87 – Bush Highway interchange. The southbound lanes from milepost 204.3 to 206.7 will be reconstructed and widened from milepost 206.7 to 209.7. When constructed, the project will improve SR 87’s safety and functionality. The second segment from milepost 211.8 to Milepost 213.0 is an erosion control project.

Once the design is completed, it is anticipated that construction of the erosion control portion of the project will occur between March 1, 2010 and September 28, 2010. The reconstruction and widening portion of the project is anticipated to occur between September 7, 2010 and June 10, 2011. Southbound lanes will be closed during a majority of this construction period with both north and southbound traffic using one lane on the northbound side.

The process of constructing improvements to SR 87 (Duthie-Martin Highway) will require traffic restrictions that may impact motorists using the roadway as their preferred route of travel.
