What's New

The following is the result of changes to Arizona law effective November 8, 2009.

Special Plate Availability - The following plates may now be ordered online, by mail or at any MVD office, without first applying to the sponsoring organization: Choose Life, University of Phoenix and Wildlife Conservation. See the Special License Plates and Placards for additional information on these and other plates available.

The following is the result of changes to Arizona law effective October 4, 2009.

Trailers 6,000-10,000 lbs - A trailer will be permanently (PERM) registered with a one-time fee if it has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 10,000 lbs or less and is used for noncommercial purposes. Previously, trailers were required to have a GVW of less than 6,000 lbs to be classified as noncommercial and qualify for PERM registration. Travel trailers and tent trailers are not eligible for the PERM designation.

Trailers 10,000 lbs or less and classified as commercial must continue to be registered annually or biennially.

If the trailer has a specialty and/or personalized plate, a renewal notice will be sent for the plate fee only.

The following is the result of changes to Arizona law effective September 30, 2009.

Bi-Fuel - Bi-fuel vehicles (vehicles that can operate on gasoline and another fuel independently) are no longer classified as Alternative Fuel vehicles and may not be registered as such or receive the Alternative Fuel license plate. As a result, the vehicles are no longer eligible to receive the reduced vehicle license tax (VLT) and may not be driven in the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes with less than two occupants (including the driver) during peak hours.

Current bi-fuel vehicle owners are allowed to keep their alternative fuel plates and use the HOV lanes with a single occupant, but a license plate cannot be transferred to another bi-fuel vehicle.
