New License, New Process

What is changing?

Customers purchasing a new or duplicate driver license, identification card or instruction permit in MVD or Authorized Third Party offices will receive it in the mail. At the offices, customers will be issued a temporary credential with their photo. The credentials are also being redesigned and will have enhanced security features. 

Where will I receive my new license?

You will receive your new credential at the mailing address you provide on your application. It is important that the address be current, complete and where you receive mail from the U.S. Postal Service. Allow up to 15 days for delivery of the new credential. 

Why are these changes being made?

The new process is more secure and designed to protect your personal information to reduce the chances of fraud. In addition, the complexity of the new credential, along with the security features and processes in place, make it impractical to produce the permanent credential in offices. 

When do the changes take effect?

The changes became effective June 16, 2014.

Will the temporary license be accepted as a valid form of identification by businesses or at airport security checkpoints?

The decision to accept the temporary as proof of identity exists solely with the organization requesting to see the license or identification card.

How long can I use the temporary credential?

A temporary driver license, identification card and instruction permit are valid for 30 days from the date of issue. 

I lost my license and need a new one right away. What can I do if they are not being issued on-site?

You can go to an office and order a duplicate. You will receive a temporary license before leaving. If you order a duplicate on ServiceArizona.com, you can request express delivery for your license. You will not receive a temporary credential using ServiceArizona.com. 

 

If my license is current, can I keep it instead of getting a new one?

Yes. Residents with a valid driver license or identification card are not required to obtain the redesigned credential immediately. Existing credentials will remain valid either until their date of expiration or until a new photo is required after 12 years.

My license is current, but I like the new one. Can I replace it with the new design?

Yes, but you are not required to do so. Assuming you do not need a new photo, duplicate licenses can be ordered online at ServiceArizona.com. Beginning June 16, 2014, all licenses ordered will have the new design.

How much does the new license cost?

Fees vary depending on situations, but there are no changes to the current fee structure.

Does the expiration date change on my new credential?

No, there are no changes to the expiration date.

Are other states issuing temporary credentials?

Yes, most states use central issuance instead of over-the-counter delivery as they transition to higher-security credentials.

What is different about this new credential?

  • A larger primary portrait with a smaller redundant ghost portrait ensuring customer appearance is clearly reflected
  • A high-security design comprised of unique Arizona geological features in the background created by using many different patterns, lines and images (This provides the overall look of the credential.)
  • A laser perforation in the shape of Arizona, which when held up to the light, is used to quickly authenticate the credential
  • Tactile date of birth field to assist in authenticating the credential using the sense of touch (The date in this field will have a raised feel to it.)
  • A tricolor optically variable device consisting of the state outline, the state name “Arizona,” the state seal, a saguaro cactus and a star (This laminate overlay provides the final layer of the credential and one more feature for authentication.)
