Crews will conduct blasting operations overnight Monday, August 6 on Interstate 17 at Big Bug Creek just south of Cordes Junction, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The highway will be closed intermittently for up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. to provide a safe work zone.
Drivers can also expect the following restrictions as crews remove excess dirt from the median and place concrete girders on the new Arcosanti bridge over I-17:
- Sunday, August 5: The interstate will be narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- Monday through Thursday, August 6 to August 10: The interstate will be narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- Tuesday, August 7: Drivers on southbound I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. will be shifted onto the off and on ramps through the work zone at the Arcosanti bridge over I-17.
- Wednesday, August 8: Drivers on northbound I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. will be shifted onto the off and on ramps through the work zone at the Arcosanti bridge over I-17.
Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules in order to avoid the closures during those hours or allow extra travel time.
The work is part of a $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17/State Route 69 traffic interchange. For more information on the project, including photos and video, please visit the project website.
The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
