The Arizona Department of Transportation has begun construction on a project to reconstruct three bridges and realign US 191 in Sanders. The project will replace the bridges over Interstate 40, the Puerco River and the railroad. The project is scheduled for completion by late spring 2014.
The construction of the current bridges date back to 1949. The new bridges will be rebuilt and upgraded to allow wider lanes for traffic and also provide a sidewalk area for pedestrians. US 191 through Sanders will also be realigned to provide a wider roadway for traffic and pedestrians. New guardrail, street lights, sidewalks and upgraded access to side streets and businesses will also be part of the project. The construction of the new bridge over I-40 will also include construction of new on and off ramps to and from the freeway.
Construction on all three bridges will start quickly and almost at the same time. The bridge construction will be completed by early 2014 while the paving portion of US 191 will be completed by late spring 2014.
What to expect:
- Travelers will notice construction of the three bridges and the realignment of US 191 starting to the west of and parallel to the current bridges and roadway. Once the new sections of bridge and roadway are completed, traffic will be moved to those areas while the rest of thebridge and roadwork is finsished. Speeds through the construction zone will be reduced and there may be intermittent delays of up to fifteen minutes, so plan for extra travel time.
- Access to businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
- The construction team will coordinate closely with businesses and keep the traveling public and local community informed as construction progresses.
