Overnight bridge work on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week

Highway closed up to 15 minutes Wednesday night for southbound traffic

The following late night closures and restrictions will be in place (weather permitting) on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week as crews work on new bridges and remove the old Cordes Lakes Road bridge, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation:

Sunday, Nov. 11:

  • Drivers on northbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour to Stagecoach Road and then to the new Arcosanti traffic interchange to continue northbound on I-17 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Drivers on southbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour over the Arcosanti bridge to the State Route 69 on-ramp back onto southbound I-17 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Monday, Nov. 12:
  • Cordes Lakes Road (in front of McDonald's) will be restricted to traffic exiting northbound I-17 beginning at 7 p.m. and will become a one-way road eastbound for the next three months. Drivers who wish to access I-17 or SR 69 will be directed to use Stagecoach Road and then to the Arcosanti traffic interchange to make appropriate connections.

Monday, Nov. 12 and Tuesday, Nov. 13:

  • Drivers on northbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour to Stagecoach Road and then to the new Arcosanti traffic interchange to continue northbound on I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Drivers on southbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour over the Arcosanti bridge to the State Route 69 on-ramp back onto southbound I-17 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 14:
  • Intermittent southbound I-17 closures are expected for up to 15 minutes at a time between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. for work on the new southbound Big Bug Creek bridge.
  • Traffic will be narrowed to one lane in each direction through the work zone from 5 p.m. to 11 a.m. as crews work on the new southbound Big Bug Creek bridge.
  • Drivers on northbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour to Stagecoach Road and then to the new Arcosanti traffic interchange to continue northbound on I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews continue with bridge demolition of old Cordes Lakes Road bridge over I-17.
  • Drivers on southbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour over the Arcosanti bridge to the State Route 69 on-ramp back onto southbound I-17 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.to allow crews to continue work on demolition of old Cordes Lakes Road bridge.

Thursday, Nov. 15:

  • Drivers on northbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour to Stagecoach Road and then to the new Arcosanti traffic interchange to continue northbound on I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews continue with bridge demolition of old Cordes Lakes Road bridge over I-17.
  • Drivers on southbound I-17 will be shifted through a detour over the Arcosanti bridge to the SR 69 on-ramp back onto southbound I-17 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.to allow crews to continue work on demolition of old Cordes Lakes Road bridge.

The work is part of a $50 million project to modernize the I-17/SR 69 interchange.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
