Reconstruction of Interstate 17 traffic interchange at Munds Park continues

Bridges complete

March 15, 2012

The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed reconstruction of the bridges on Interstate 17 at Munds Park, approximately 20 miles south of Flagstaff. The $10 million project includes reconstructing the southbound and northbound I-17 bridges and ramps, as well as the realignment of Pinewood Boulevard. The first phase of this project, which included the reconstruction of the northbound I-17 bridge and ramps, was completed last year.

Beginning Wednesday (Aug. 22), crews will repave the northbound and southbound on and off ramps. The ramps will remain open, but traffic will be shifted onto temporary ramps. Traffic is scheduled to be switched onto the final ramp alignments by the end of August. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Pinewood Boulevard will be paved under I-17 beginning Tuesday (Aug. 28). Pinewood Boulevard will remain open and traffic is scheduled to be put onto the new alignment by mid-November.

Southbound I-17 traffic is currently being detoured to northbound I-17. This detour will remain in place until mid-September, when the southbound lanes are paved and traffic is rerouted back to the southbound lanes. After the shift, traffic will be restricted to one lane while crews remove the temporary traffic crossovers, work on guardrail, and complete other project elements.

Crews will return in the summer of 2013 to apply the top layer of asphalt pavement.

The speed limit is reduced throughout the construction zone and drivers are reminded to slow down, proceed through the work zone with caution, and be alert for construction equipment and crews.
