What's New

The following is the result of legislative changes.

Implementation of Arizona House Bill 2428, signed into law in 2012, is part of a new driver license credential redesign project that will include the VETERAN designation on the driver license. ADOT’s estimated timeline to complete the project is late fall 2013.

We continue to work closely with – and provide updates on this project to – Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services and various veteran’s groups.


The following new license plate is available beginning February 24, 2013.

The following is the result of legislative changes.

CDL Documentation Requirements – For commercial driver license applicants, the requirements for acceptable proof of identification, age and that your presence in the United States is authorized under federal law, is now separate from that for noncommercial applicants. Please see the new CDL Documentation Requirements.


The following new license plate is available beginning September 23, 2012.

Childhood Cancer Research - $17 goes to the childhood cancer and rare childhood disease research fund.

The following is a new customer service.

Be Prepared - plan ahead! Save time and submit your driver license or identification card application online before you visit an MVD office. Complete the application and send it directly to MVD over a secure connection. You will print a barcode to take to the MVD office, and your application will be awaiting your arrival.

This website also offers a check list of required identification documents. Choose the ones you plan to bring to the office to complete the application process.

The following two new license plates are available March 4, 2012.

In God We Trust - $17 goes to promote the national motto "In God We Trust".

Thunderbird School of Global Management - $17 goes for the school’s operations and activities.

The following is the result of changes effective December 18, 2011.

The maximum number of characters allowed for personalization of these license plates, increased from 5 characters to 6 characters.

The following four new license plates are available October 30, 2011.

Arizona Centennial - $17 goes to Arizona Centennial Special Plate Fund, which will be used for Arizona Centennial projects, events, and for the operation of the Centennial Museum.

Boy Scouts of Arizona - $17 goes to the Grand Canyon Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Channel 8 PBS - $17 goes to Arizona Foundation of Public Broadcast Television, which provides noncommercial and nonsectarian educational television services.

Hunger Relief - $17 goes to Hunger Relief Special Plate Fund, which will be used to fund organizations that provide food distribution to hungry people in Arizona.

$25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. No special requirements. Available to everyone. May be ordered online.

The following is the result of changes effective October 27, 2011.

Online CDL Medical Status Verification - Commercial Driver License holders and/or persons applying for a CDL that have submitted their medical certification may now review the status of their certification online using the new CDL Medical Status Verification service.

You will be required to enter your driver license number and expiration date. The system will check our records and tell you if your medical certification is on file, or if you have to contact our Medical Review Program for additional requirements.


The following is the result of changes effective September 30, 2011.

Energy Efficient Plate - Arizona’s "Energy Efficient Pilot Program" has reached the maximum limit of 10,000 special license plates issued. There are no plates available at this time. Thank you for your interest in the program.

For this pilot program, qualifying low emissions, energy efficient vehicles were issued a special license plate with a "Hybrid" graphic that permits the operator to drive in any carpool lane in Arizona, regardless of the number of occupants.



The following vehicles, any year, were eligible:
  • Honda Civic Hybrid
  • Honda Insight
  • Toyota Prius

The following is the result of changes effective May 31, 2011.

Driver License Practice Tests – We have added Driver License Practice tests to the website. They contain a sample of the type of questions asked on an Arizona driver license examination and are designed to help you check the knowledge needed to obtain a driver license or instruction permit.


The following is the result of changes effective March 01, 2011.

Duplicate Driver License Fee - The fee for a duplicate driver license or ID card is $12.00.

Abandoned Vehicle Fee – The fee for an abandoned vehicle is $500 ($600 on federal land).


The following is the result of changes effective January 23, 2011.

Military Support/Freedom Small Size Plate - The Military Support/Freedom license plate is now also available in the small size plate (4” x 7”), for motorcycles and golf carts. The fee is the same as the full size plate, $25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. No special requirements. Available to everyone.

$17 goes to a special fund to benefit veterans in Arizona. May be ordered online. Also available with a disability symbol.

For plates that are mailed, the postage and handling charge is $2.15.

May be personalized (with maximum of 5 characters) for an additional $25 initial application and annual renewal fee (requires Special Plate Application form #96-0143 unless ordered online). Also available with a disability symbol.

The following is the result of changes effective December 02, 2010.

Golden Rule - The Golden Rule license plate has been redesigned to improve readability for law enforcement purposes. The new design is issued for personalized plates beginning December 02, 2010. Existing supplies of the old design will be issued until exhausted, for standard plates.

Arizona Agriculture - A new Arizona Agriculture license plate is available beginning October 24, 2010. $25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. No special requirements. Available to everyone. $17 goes to the Arizona FFA which provides premier leadership, personal growth and career success opportunities for students enrolled in Agricultural Education programs in Arizona. May be ordered online.

Also available with a disability symbol (requires disability application form #96-0104 unless eligibility currently established).

May be personalized for an additional $25 initial application and annual renewal fee (requires Special Plate Application form #96-0143 unless ordered online).

Arizona State University License Plate - A new design for the Arizona State University license plate is available beginning October 24, 2010. $25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. No special requirements. Available to everyone. $17 dollars of the initial and annual renewal fee goes to the university for academic scholarships. May be ordered online.

The new design replaces the existing Arizona State University license plate design, which will remain valid. Anyone requesting a replacement for the old license plate will receive the new design for a $5.00 replacement fee, plus postage/handling (if mailed).

Also available with a disability symbol (requires disability application form #96-0104 unless eligibility currently established).

May be personalized for an additional $25 initial application and annual renewal fee (requires Special Plate Application form #96-0143 unless ordered online).

Masonic Fraternity - A new Masonic Fraternity license plate is available beginning October 24, 2010. $25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. No special requirements. Available to everyone. $17 goes to charities supported by the Arizona Masons. May be ordered online.

Northern Arizona University License Plate - A new design for the Northern Arizona University license plate is available beginning October 24, 2010. $25 initial application fee/ $25 annual renewal. No special requirements. Available to everyone. $17 dollars of the initial and annual renewal fee goes to the university for academic scholarships. May be ordered online.

The new design replaces the existing Northern Arizona University license plate design, which will remain valid. Anyone requesting a replacement for the old license plate will receive the new design for a $5.00 replacement fee, plus postage/handling (if mailed).

The following is the result of changes effective August 29, 2010.

Five-Year Registration Option - Beginning August 29, 2010, a five-year registration option is offered for vehicles that do not require an emissions test during the five years of the registration period. Some vehicles that qualify are:

  • Most vehicles of any model year registered outside the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas, where emissions testing is not required.
  • New vehicles that have never been registered in Arizona or in any other state.
  • Vehicles 1966 and older.

Vehicle license tax and other applicable fees are calculated and paid for all five years at the time of registration. However, only a one-year registration fee is required for the entire period.
