State Route 89A Improvements

Beginning April 2014, the Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a project to improve a 3.5-mile segment of SR 89A at the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks within the Coconino National Forest.

The work includes milling the existing asphalt and repaving the roadway between Pine Flat Campground and Vista Point Overlook (mileposts 387-390), located eight miles north of Slide Rock State Park and about 13 miles north of the city of Sedona.

Additional work includes replacing guardrail, making repairs to the Pumphouse Wash Bridge and "rock scaling" to prevent rock falls on the roadway.

What to Expect

Lane restrictions may be used at times on SR 89A throughout the duration of the project. However, to complete the work in a safe and timely manner, a full closure of SR 89A through the switchbacks, which have steep grades with little to no shoulders, will be necessary for up to five weeks following the Memorial Day holiday and prior to the July 4 holiday (May 27-July 2).

Access to Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona will be maintained throughout the project via I-17 and SR 179. During the full closure, signs and message boards will be used along I-17 and SR 179 to direct travelers to their destinations. Access will be maintained at all times for emergency vehicles.
