A project to widen and repave a 1.3-mile segment of US 191 in Chinle began July 2013. Construction starts in the area of the Chinle High School and extends south through town. The $3.6 million project will include widening and resurfacing the roadway; constructing sidewalks, curb and gutter; and installing new street lights. The project will be completed in the summer 2014.
Most of the widening, sidewalk removal and some of the paving was completed before the project was shut down for the winter. Once the project restarts this spring, work hours will be from sunrise to sunset, Monday through Friday. Business and driveway access will be maintained during construction, and efforts will be made to minimize impacts to adjacent businesses and properties. One lane of traffic will remain open at all times. Traffic lanes will be narrowed, and the speed limit will be reduced through the work zone.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect this project schedule.
