Plan for closure of the I-10 Gold Nugget Road overpass near Plomosa beginning May 15

Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan ahead for the full closure of the Interstate 10 Gold Nugget Road overpass (Exit 26) near Plomosa beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, and ending 5 p.m. Saturday, June 15.

Vehicles will be allowed to exit at Gold Nugget Road and either re-enter east- and westbound I-10 or make a right turn onto Gold Nugget road; however access to the overpass will be completely blocked off.

Detour: Westbound detours to Riggles Avenue (Exit 19) to access eastbound I-10. Eastbound detours to US 60 interchange (Exit 31) to access westbound I-10.

Drivers should plan for delays, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices and use caution around construction personnel.

Overview 

The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are repairing the pavement on Interstate 10 between Scaddan Wash (milepost 24) and Plomosa (milepost 30), east of the town of Quartzsite. The work consists of removing the existing pavement surface and replacing it with new asphalt concrete and minor bridge rehabilitation. 

Project Elements 

  • Milling the existing pavement and replacing it with new pavement, which includes mainline travel lanes, shoulders, ramps, and crossroads 
  • Replacing guardrail 
  • Replacing cattle guards
  • Repairing a bridge deck and replacing a bridge barrier
  • Installing pipe liners and fencing
  • Replacing pavement markings, signage and lighting

Project Schedule 

The project is scheduled to begin spring 2024 with completion anticipated in winter 2024. Schedules are subject to change because of weather and other unforeseen situations. 

What to Expect 

To minimize traffic impacts, paving is scheduled to occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays. Other related work will take place during the day. Drivers are asked to obey posted speed limits, traffic control devices and use caution around construction personnel and equipment. ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers and on the project traffic alert web page.
