Central District Projects

Black Canyon Cross Roads

The Black Canyon Cross Roads consists of nine projects along the I-17 corridor that have been identified and/or scheduled for study, design and/or construction through 2025. Eight of these projects involve improving capacity at traffic interchanges and one project involves a bridge reconstruction that would not only accommodate expansion of light rail along the Central Avenue corridor toward south Phoenix, but also expand I-17 to ten lanes in this location to accommodate possible future expansion. All of these projects share a similar scope and purpose of:

  • improved driver commute,
  • increased neighborhood connections,
  • protection of the environment, and
  • improved commerce opportunities.

The Traffic Interchange (TI) reconstruction project at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads will serve as the gateway to Phoenix and is the first in a series of projects in the Black Canyon Cross Roads. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in fall 2018.
