US 60 (Grand Avenue) Left-Turn Bay Extension Projects: Northern Avenue and Bethany Home Road

The Arizona Department of Transportation is lengthening the westbound turn lanes at the intersections of US 60 (Grand Avenue) and Northern Avenue and Bethany Home Road in Glendale. In addition, ADOT will construct improvements to the BNSF Railway Company crossing on Bethany Home Road and safety improvements on Bethany Home Road between US 60 and 52nd Avenue.

Scope of Work

The project includes:

  • Partially removing the US 60 raised median, curb, and adjacent pavement at the Bethany Home Road and Northern Avenue intersections
  • Installing new eastbound railroad gate arms and flashing beacons; relocating the existing cantilever frame structure; adding a new pedestrian beacon at the railroad gates; and lengthening railroad track planking
  • Installing new pedestrian ramps to comply with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements
  • Adjusting utilities to the proposed grade
  • Widening the south side of Bethany Home Road west of US 60; adding a new raised median; and installing concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk and driveways
  • Obliterating the existing pavement markings and installing new pavement markings along US 60 and Bethany Home Road
  • Installing new signage along US 60 and Bethany Home Road
  • Installing a new traffic signal on the southwest corner of US 60 and Bethany Home Road
  • Relocating street lights to accommodate the widening on Bethany Home Road
  • Removing the channelizing median island at Bethany Home Road and 52nd Avenue

Project Schedule

Construction began in fall 2019 and is scheduled to last 12 months.
