Traffic Alerts - I-17: Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Infrastructure Installation

Plan for lane restrictions on Interstate 17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff Feb. 13 - 18

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for lane restrictions along Interstate 17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff as a project to install fiber-optic cable continues along the roadway.

Drivers should slow down, proceed through the work zones with caution and watch for construction personnel while the following around-the-clock restrictions are in place from 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, through noon Friday, Feb. 18:

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane in two-mile increments between mileposts 313 – 309, south of Rocky Park Road.
  • A vehicle width limit of 16 feet will be in place. Oversized vehicles can be accommodated with advance notice.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph.

The following around-the-clock restrictions will be in place from 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, to noon Friday, Feb. 18:

  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane in two-mile increments between mileposts 305 – 309, near the Stoneman Lake Road exit.
  • A vehicle width limit of 16 feet will be in place.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph.

In addition, the following overnight restrictions will be in place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Sunday, Feb. 13, through Friday, Feb. 18:

  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between mileposts 232 – 235, near the community of New River.
  • A vehicle width limit of 14 feet will be in place.
  • The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

The fiber-optic cable installation project, which is expected to continue through mid-2022, will proceed along I-17 in segments of several miles per week.
