Traffic Alerts - I-40: Interstate 17 to Walnut Canyon Road

Expect daytime delays, lane restrictions on Interstate 40 in Flagstaff July 21 - Aug. 19

Drivers should expect delays and allow for extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who travel Interstate 40 in Flagstaff to plan for alternating lane restrictions while ADOT crews complete the pavement preservation work that began in spring 2021.

Motorists should expect delays of 30 minutes or more while the following restrictions will be in place weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Thursday, July 21, through Friday, Aug. 19:

  • East- and westbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between the junction with I-17 and Walnut Canyon Road (mileposts 195 - 205).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph in the work zones.
  • Vehicles that are 14 feet wide will be allowed through the work zone, but may not be accommodated at all times. Additional notice will be provided for locations and times when over-sized vehicles cannot be accommodated.

Vehicles wider than 14 feet may be accommodated with at least 24 hours advance notice. ADOT advises drivers to slow down and use caution around personnel and equipment while pavement repairs are underway.
