Traffic Alerts - I-40: Interstate 17 to Walnut Canyon Road

UPDATE: Plan for lane restrictions on Interstate 40 in Flagstaff through Aug. 6

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who travel Interstate 40 in Flagstaff to plan for long delays while ADOT crews continue pavement preservation work requiring lane restrictions and the installation of a temporary concrete barrier.

The following restrictions will occur nightly from 7 p.m. Monday, July 26, to 6 a.m. Friday, July 30

  • Westbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas between Walnut Canyon Road and Country Club Drive (mileposts 205-201).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 13-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The following restrictions will be in place around-the-clock from 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, to 6 a.m. Friday, July 30

  • Westbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas west of Walnut Canyon Road (between mileposts 203-202).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 13-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The following restrictions will be in place around-the-clock from 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3

  • Westbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas west of Walnut Canyon Road (between mileposts 205-203).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 13-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The following restrictions will occur nightly from 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, to 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6

  • Eastbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas between Country Club and Walnut Canyon Road (mileposts 201-205).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 13-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The following restrictions will be in place around-the-clock from 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, to 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6

  • Eastbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas near Walnut Canyon Road (between mileposts 204-205).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 13-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

  • Eastbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas near Walnut Canyon Road (between mileposts 204-205).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 16-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The following restrictions will occur nightly from 7 p.m. Sunday, July 25, to 6 a.m. Friday, July 30

  • Westbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas between Walnut Canyon Road and Country Club Drive (mileposts 205-201).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 16-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The following restrictions will occur nightly from 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, to 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6

  • Eastbound I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in work areas between Country Club and Walnut Canyon Road (mileposts 201-205).
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.
  • A 16-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

The scheduled restrictions may change due to weather conditions affecting the pavement.

The pavement preservation work is part of a larger ADOT project currently underway to improve the roadway and traffic interchanges along a 10-mile stretch of I-40 between Interstate 17 (milepost 195) and Walnut Canyon Road (milepost 205). Since 2016, ADOT has replaced about 90 miles of pavement and repaired, upgraded or replaced 35 bridges along I-40.

ADOT advises drivers to slow down and use caution around personnel and equipment while pavement repairs are underway.
