SR 89A Oak Creek Canyon Rockfall Mitigation

Overview

Starting late summer 2021, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will begin performing needed work on unstable rock-wall faces at two locations along State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, between Flagstaff and Sedona. The project, a critical safety-related priority for ADOT, will require lane restrictions and temporary closures.

What to Expect

Construction activities at the southern work zone (milepost 375) will include rock blasting, manually removing loose rocks from the slopes, and drilling and rock-bolt installation. Activities at the northern work zone (milepost 389) will include removing loose rocks from the slopes and drilling and rock-bolt installation. The project is scheduled to be completed late spring 2022, depending upon weather and other unforeseen factors.

Other Upcoming Projects

Two other ADOT projects—one at the Y Roundabout at the junction of SR 89A and SR 179 in Sedona and the other on SR 179 between Interstate 17 and Red Rock Vista—will partially overlap with the rockfall mitigation project. To help minimize traffic disruptions, work at the Y Roundabout will be limited to overnight hours only.

  • In addition, the Pumphouse Wash Bridge and Oak Creek Canyon Drainage and Sediment Control projects are planned to begin on SR 89A in spring 2022. These projects will also require lane restrictions and temporary closures. ADOT will provide more information on these projects prior to construction.
