SR 89A - SR 179 Sedona Intersection Modernization

Project Overview

An Arizona Department of Transportation and city of Sedona project has begun that will modernize the intersection at State Routes 89A and 179 in Sedona – known as the “Y Roundabout” -- with pavement rehabilitation, signage, striping and other improvements. This is one of Sedona's busiest intersections in terms of traffic volume.

Concrete removal and replacement on ADA ramps was scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 13, 2021. Paving of the roadway is not scheduled to begin until early October, and much of that work will be done at night over a two-week period to minimize disruptions to adjacent businesses and the traveling public. The project is expected to be completed in late November.

The project originally envisioned adding slip lanes for SR 89A drivers traveling from west Sedona to southbound SR 179, and for SR 179 drivers traveling northbound on SR 89A toward uptown.

After a detailed analysis of testing data in summer 2020, ADOT and the city of Sedona did not see enough of a benefit to continue moving forward with the project as initially scoped. Thus, the proposal to add a slip lane at the intersection will not be pursued. As a result, no lanes will be added or changed, and there will be no encroachment on private property.

    About the Project

Work is expected to be completed in late November 2021. Mill-and-fill work will entail removing the existing surface layer with a milling machine. New asphalt will then be used to replace the milled location, adding years of life to the road surface. Access to the traveling public will be maintained at all times, with no full closure of the roadway.
