SR 89A - SR 179 Sedona Intersection Modernization

Overview

Project Cost: $656,000

An Arizona Department of Transportation and city of Sedona project will modernize the intersection at State Routes 89A and 179 in Sedona with pavement rehabilitation, signage, striping and other improvements.

Stakeholder Updates

Known as the “Y Roundabout,” this is one of Sedona's busiest intersections in terms of traffic volume.

Concrete removal and replacement on ADA ramps began in September 2021. Paving of the roadway began in October, and much of that work was done at night over a two-week period to minimize disruptions to adjacent businesses and the traveling public. The project is expected to be completed with final striping in spring 2022.

The project originally envisioned adding slip lanes for SR 89A drivers traveling from west Sedona to southbound SR 179, and for SR 179 drivers traveling northbound on SR 89A toward uptown.

After a detailed analysis of testing data in summer 2020, ADOT and the city of Sedona did not see enough of a benefit to continue moving forward with the project as initially scoped. Thus, the proposal to add a slip lane at the intersection will not be pursued. As a result, no lanes will be added or changed, and there will be no encroachment on private property.
