I-40: Meteor Crater Rest Area

Full closure of Meteor Crater Rest Area east of Flagstaff begins on August 15

Overview

I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Areas

The nearly $3.5 million renovation of the Meteor Crater Rest Area, located at milepost 235 east of Flagstaff, includes upgrading the facility’s electrical, mechanical and water/wastewater systems as well as making site improvements. Construction on the parking lot is expected to begin in mid-August and be completed in the fall.

This work is part of a larger project that also included the renovation of the I-40 Painted Cliffs Rest Area near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. That work was completed last September.

What to expect during construction

The Meteor Crater Rest Area on I-40 has been closed to the general public since January for renovation work. Only commercial truck drivers had access for parking.

Current Restrictions and Closures

The Meteor Crater Rest Area will be closed to all drivers beginning Sunday, Aug.15.

During the closure, the nearest traveler facilities will be in Flagstaff and Winslow. Please use the link to view the locations of all state highway rest areas.
