District-wide Pavement Preservation Projects - Southcentral
The Arizona Department of Transportation has allocated $36 million for multiple pavement preservation projects on highways across the state during fiscal year 2020, which began July 1 and ends on June 30, 2020.
ADOT evaluated existing pavement conditions to identify locations in each of its seven districts that are currently in good condition. The goal is to undertake preventative-maintenance projects in those locations now so roadways remain in good condition vs. undertaking much more costly and impactful repair projects later - after the pavement has deteriorated. Investing in preventative-maintenance projects directly aligns with ADOT’s Long Range Transportation Plan goal of maintaining, preserving and extending the service life of existing state transportation system infrastructure.
The projects are a mix of fog seals and crack seals which protect and extend pavement life. The current slate of 86 projects, which cover 4,160 lane miles, is scheduled to be under contract or complete before June 30, 2020.
Expect to see crews at work in different parts of the state during different times of the year based on outside air temperatures and other weather conditions. Generally, work is scheduled to begin in fall 2019 and continue in spring and summer 2020. ADOT will provide more specific information about project schedules and potential impacts as it becomes available.
