State Route 86: Guardrail replacement project west of Sells

The Arizona Department of Transportation is completing a project to replace guardrail on State Route 86 near the Quijotoa Pass west of Sells (mileposts 88 to 91) on the Tohono O’odham Nation.

  • Drivers should expect a single lane of traffic where crews are working. Flaggers will guide motorists through the work zone.
  • Expect delays of up to 15 minutes during daylight hours.

The project will be completed in the summer and early fall of 2020.

Background

SR 86 serves as a recreational and commercial route between Tucson and southwestern Arizona, carrying a high percentage of trucks and recreational vehicles. SR 86 provides access to the Tohono O’odham Nation and is widely used to reach popular destinations such as Organ Pipe National Monument and Puerto Peñasco, Mexico (also known as Rocky Point).
