Upcoming Projects - SR 88 (Apache Trail)

The US Department of Transportation - Central Federal Lands, with cooperation from the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Tonto National Forest, will begin a project to improve an 11.16-mile gravel section of SR 88 (Apache Trail) between milepost 229.2 near the Apache Lake Marina and milepost 240.6 near the Theodore Roosevelt Dam tentatively starting in late summer 2022.

Crews will apply an aggregate base and a chip seal pavement to the roadway. In addition, improvements to sight distance in five locations will be completed for roadway safety.  The project will also improve stormwater drainage and replace, repair, and/or extend culverts that are not currently functional or have been damaged by flood events within the project area.  Existing interpretive kiosk panels will be improved and a History of Apache Trail coffee table book will be published.

Motorists should expect intermittent flaggers and short closures to allow for safe rock blasting operations while work is underway.
