UPDATE: Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard restrictions planned Sept. 16-19

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following closures and restrictions as part of the Loop 101 widening project in north Scottsdale:

The southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will continue to be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, through Friday morning, Sept. 19.
- Detour: Drivers may consider exiting at Princess Drive/Pima Road before using the southbound Loop 101 frontage road to access Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard or Raintree Drive.

NEW: Eastbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard at Loop 101 will be closed from 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17.
- Detour: Drivers may use the southbound Loop 101 frontage road to eastbound Raintree Drive to the northbound Loop 101 frontage road to access Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard east of the closure.

Westbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will continue to be narrowed to one lane between 90th Street and Hayden nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, through Friday morning, Sept. 19.

UPDATED: Eastbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be narrowed to one lane between Hayden Road and 90th Street nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Wednesday, Sept. 17, and ending Friday morning, Sept. 19.

Upcoming Closures

Northbound Loop 101 between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29.

The southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Raintree Drive will be closed for approximately 60 days beginning 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2.

DETOUR: Drivers may consider using the southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and using the southbound Loop 101 frontage road to Raintree Drive.

The northbound Loop 101 on-ramp at Raintree Drive will be closed beginning at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, July 20, for approximately 60 days, for ramp reconstruction.

DETOUR: Drivers may consider using the northbound Loop 101 frontage road to the northbound Loop 101 on-ramp at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the city of Scottsdale, is widening Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Princess Dr/Pima Rd and Shea Blvd by one general-purpose lane in each direction and modifying existing interchanges to improve traffic flow on Loop 101 and the cross streets.

Widen Loop 101 between Princess Dr/Pima Rd and Shea Blvd by one general-purpose lane in each direction
Add a third southbound left turn lane at Princess Dr/Pima Rd interchange
Convert Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd interchange to a diamond configuration
Add right turn lanes at Raintree Dr and Shea Blvd
Update sidewalks to make them ADA compliant
Upgrade freeway and ramp lighting

What to Expect

Construction began in January 2024 and will take approximately two years to complete.
Work will require lane restrictions and full closures on Loop 101, the interchange ramps and cross streets, and will occur primarily during overnight hours and weekends to minimize traffic impacts. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.
Long-term on- and off-ramp closures will be required (up to 60 days).
ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers and on the project web page.

Previous Milestones

The public was surveyed in 2020 to gather input on the proposed interchange concepts.
The updated Design Concept Report (DCR) was released in February 2021.
A Noise Analysis was completed in Oct. 2022.
A Virtual Public Meeting was held on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022.
