North-South Corridor Study: Proposed New Transportation Route in Pinal County

North-South Corridor Study: Proposed New Transportation Route in Pinal County

Overview

The North-South Corridor is a 55-mile planned future transportation route in Pinal County that would stretch from US 60 in Apache Junction to Interstate 10 in Eloy, and pass through the town of Queen Creek, city of Coolidge, town of Florence and portions of unincorporated Pinal County.

The North-South Corridor is also proposed to connect with the future extension of SR 24.

The purpose of the North-South Corridor is to address current and future transportation needs in Pinal County, improve regional connectivity and provide an additional connection through a growing area of Pinal County.

A continuous, access-controlled north-to-south transportation corridor would:

  • Improve access to future activity centers
  • Improve regional mobility
  • Improve north-to-south connectivity
  • Integrate the region’s transportation network
  • existing and future population and employment growth
  • Provide an alternative to avoid congestion on I-10

On August 20, 2021, ADOT published the final  Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Record of Decision (ROD) for the North-South Corridor study. The ROD represents ADOT’s decision to move forward with the Selected Corridor Alternative identified in the EIS, a 1,500-foot North-South corridor, which identifies the general location of this future transportation route. For more information visit the Tier 1 EIS Study web page.

Additional engineering and Tier 2 environmental studies are needed to refine the corridor to a proposed 400-foot freeway alignment and identify the location of interchanges and other design features.

In 2023 ADOT initiated separate North-South Corridor studies for two segments of the corridor:

These studies are expected to take two to three years to complete. Currently, there is no timeline to build any portion of the North-South Corridor, as there is no funding identified for design, right-of-way or construction.
