Transferring Ownership of a Vehicle (eTitle Transfer)

Buying or selling a vehicle in Arizona? eTitle Transfer lets you complete the whole process online, right from home, and we'll guide you through each step.

It's fast and secure. You can finish your title transfer in a few minutes, without a trip to the office, paper documents, or the worry of a lost or stolen title.

Transferring to or from another state? If the vehicle is titled in another state, or the buyer or seller lives outside Arizona, the process works a little differently. Use Transferring Ownership of a Vehicle Out-of-State (eTitle Transfer) instead.

What you'll need

For an in-state transfer, your vehicle must:

• Have an Arizona title and current Arizona registration
• Be a passenger vehicle (no commercial vehicles, trailers, or motorcycles)
• Have no liens
• Have no more than two owners
• Have no brands or statuses that prohibit transfer
• Have no existing Sold Notice
• Have current emissions, if applicable—or be sold to a buyer in a non-emissions area

The buyer and seller each need:

• An Arizona Driver License or identification card
• An active AZ MVD Now account with Enhanced Authentication completed

Note: eTitle Transfer supports one buyer per transfer. You can add more owners at a Motor Vehicle  Division (MVD) or Third Party office afterward. Additional fees may apply.

How it works

When both the buyer and seller are in Arizona, sign in to AZ MVD Now to get started.

1. Both parties sign in to AZ MVD Now and complete Enhanced Authentication (where we take your photo with a webcam or smart phone and compare it to a photo of you on file to make sure it’s you).
2. The buyer generates an eTitle Buyer Code and shares it with the seller.
3. The seller selects the vehicle, then enters the odometer reading and eTitle Buyer Code.
4. The buyer reviews the vehicle information and continues with the transfer.
5. The seller releases ownership. If there are two sellers, both must release ownership.
6. The buyer completes the title and registration.

Sellers: Record your odometer reading carefully. Accurate recording is required by law and helps protect your vehicle's value.

Check your transfer status

Sign in to AZ MVD Now and select the Transfers in Progress tab. Each transfer is labeled In-State or Out-of-State, so you always know where things stand.

Costs, fees, and timeline

Fees:

• Sellers: There's no fee to use eTitle Transfer.
• Buyers: Standard title and registration fees apply, and you pay them before completing the transaction.

Timeline:

• The Transfer Code is valid for 48 hours and can be used for more than one transaction.
• Once a transfer starts, complete it within 24 hours or it will expire.
• Either party can cancel any time before the seller releases ownership.

After your transfer

Sellers:

• Your old paper title is no longer valid, so you can destroy it.
• A Sold Notice is generated automatically and appears in My Documents on AZ MVD Now.
• You may be eligible for a registration fee credit or refund.

Buyers:

• Your title is held electronically and appears in My Vehicles on AZ MVD Now.
• You'll get a standard one-year registration and a standard license plate. Specialty plates are requested separately.
• Your physical plate, registration, and tabs arrive in about 15 days.
• You can print temporary documents right away, or find them later under My Account > Service History on AZ MVD Now.

When you'll need to visit an office

Some situations require an in-person visit to a Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) or Third Party office instead of eTitle Transfer:

• Adding a lien to the vehicle
• Applying a registration exemption, such as a tribal exemption
• Transactions involving a power of attorney, divorce decree, or other legal documents
• Adding co-owners after the transfer
