Change your Name with MVD

Change your Name with MVD

If you’ve legally changed your name (got married, etc), you’ll need to let us know. We’ll update your driver record and vehicle registration records. You’ll also need to order a new driver license or ID card.

This requires an MVD office visit.

You must update your name with MVD within 10 days of your legal name change taking effect.

Step 1: Update your name with Social Security Administration

Before MVD can update your records, first change your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA). We're required to verify your Social Security number before updating your information.

Contact SSA:

After you change your name with SSA, wait two business days before you visit an MVD office.

Step 2: Visit an MVD office

After updating your name with SSA, visit any MVD or Authorized Third Party office with identification showing both your new and previous names.

Required documents (must be original or certified copies):

  • Marriage license or domestic partnership certificate
  • Citizenship/naturalization document
  • Divorce decree
  • Adoption decree
  • Court order

Certified copies must be certified by the issuing agency.
