You Need Insurance in Arizona
Arizona law says you need liability insurance for every vehicle you drive on Arizona roads. That includes golf carts, motorcycles, and mopeds too.
After you register your vehicle, you have 30 days to submit proof of Arizona insurance.
Off-road vehicles may not need insurance.
Remember, it's your responsibility to buy Arizona insurance through an insurance company.
How Much Insurance Do You Need?
Arizona requires these minimum coverage amounts:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability for one person and $50,000 for two or more persons
- $15,000 property damage liability
Keeping Your Insurance Information Current
Your insurance company automatically tells us about changes to your policy, including cancellations, non-renewals, and new policies.
If your insurance company tells us your policy ended, we'll send you a notice to check your insurance status. You can check your status anytime on AZ MVD Now. Contact your insurance company to make sure they sent us your information.
Not Driving Your Vehicle on Arizona Roads?
If your vehicle will sit in storage or won't be on Arizona roads for a while, you can temporarily stop your Arizona insurance. This is called de-insuring your vehicle.
How to De-Insure Your Vehicle
To de-insure your vehicle, sign into your AZ MVD Now Account and go to Registration > Insurance Management > De-Insurance.
Important: Before you resume driving, reinstate your insurance policy (your insurance company will notify us).
Your registration is not valid until your insurance company notifies us that you have an active Arizona policy.
What Happens Without Insurance?
Not having proper insurance can lead to suspension of your vehicle registration or driver license.
Police officers will ask for proof of insurance during traffic stops or accidents. They may take your license plate if you can't provide proof of insurance.
Getting Your Registration Back (Reinstatement)
To get your vehicle registration back after suspension, you need proof of Arizona liability insurance that was active before the suspension. If you can't get that proof, you'll pay a $50 fee and be required to provide current proof of Arizona insurance. You may also need an SR22 certificate.
What is an SR22?
An SR22 is a certificate that shows you have the minimum liability insurance requirement. Your insurance company sends it directly to us.
If your license or registration was suspended, you may need to keep an SR22 for three years. If you let it lapse, your license and registration will be suspended again.
Note: Each case is different. Contact us to find out how long you need to keep your SR22.
Don't own a vehicle? You can get a non-owner SR22 if you need to meet insurance requirements after a serious traffic offense.
Special Requirements for Taxi, Livery, and Limousine Services
A taxi, livery vehicle or limousine must maintain minimum financial liability coverage as follows:

While available but not transporting passengers:
