Getting your Arizona Driver License or ID Card when you're from another country? We're here to help guide you through the process step by step.

Do You Need an Arizona License?

Just Visiting Arizona?

If you're visiting Arizona temporarily, you can legally drive using a valid driver license from your home country. An international driver permit isn't required but is recommended since it's printed in English.

Planning to Stay in Arizona?

Arizona law requires you to get an Arizona driver license if any of these apply:

  • You work in Arizona (except seasonal agricultural work)
  • You enroll children in school at resident tuition rates
  • You operate a business with an Arizona office
  • You remain in Arizona for seven months or more in any calendar year

Choose Your License Type

Arizona Travel ID (REAL ID)

You'll need a REAL ID-compliant credential to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings. The Arizona Travel ID meets these requirements and features a star in a circle showing it's TSA-ready.

Arizona Driver License or ID Card

This credential lets you drive on public roads in Arizona and serves as identification for most purposes. It is not valid for federal travel.

What Documents You Need

All applicants must provide proof that their presence is authorized under federal law. They also must have proof of Arizona residency.

  • Authorized presence document (see examples below)
  • Proof of Arizona residency (two documents for Travel ID)
  • Social Security Number may be required depending on your Class Type.

Common Authorized Presence Documents

Employment Authorization Card

All Employment Authorization Card holders must provide their Social Security Number or Card.

Need a replacement Social Security card? Visit the Social Security Administration website to request one online.

USCIS Form I-94

The class type on your I-94 determines additional requirements.

Special requirement for students: If you have Class Type F1 or J1, you must also bring USCIS Form I-20 or DS-2019.

Permanent Resident/Resident Alien Card (Green Card)

Shows your permanent resident status in the United States.

Note: These are sample documents. Other authorized presence documents may be accepted. Check the complete identification requirements list for all accepted documents.

Foreign License Reciprocity

Good news! If you have a valid license from certain countries, you may not need to take written or road tests.

Countries with Testing Exemptions

  • Canada, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan: Exempt from both written and road tests

All other countries require both written and road tests for new Arizona licenses.
