What is Future Financial Responsibility?
Future financial responsibility, commonly called SR-22, is proof that you have and maintain the minimum required driver insurance coverage. It's required when you're convicted of certain traffic violations or fail to maintain liability insurance for a vehicle you own or lease. Your insurance company files this proof electronically with MVD as required by Arizona law.
When It's Required
You may need to maintain Future Financial Responsibility for certain violations, including:
Alcohol- or drug-related revocations
- 3 years from the end date of your revocation
Court-conviction DUI suspension
- 3 years from the end date of your suspension
Implied-consent suspension (refusing alcohol/drug test)
- 3 years from the end date of your suspension
Insurance law violations (only A.R.S. 28-4135 violations)
- 3 years from the start date you become eligible for reinstatement
Nonpayment and default judgment
- Throughout the term of the judgment plus a full 2 years after satisfaction of the judgment
Acquiring a SIIRDL
- Throughout the restricted license timeframe.
Note: An SR-22 is not required for a SIIRDL due to Admin Per Se.
How to Get Future Financial Responsibility
You have two options to establish proof:
Option 1: SR-22 Certificate (Most Common)
Contact an Arizona-licensed insurance company to purchase automobile insurance coverage. If you don't own a vehicle, you'll need a non-owner insurance policy. Once you have coverage, request that your insurance company file an SR-22 certificate with MVD. Your insurance company will electronically file this proof with MVD.
Option 2: Cash Deposit
Deposit $40,000 with the Arizona State Treasurer's Office and obtain a certificate of deposit. Email MVD with your certificate.
Don't let Coverage Lapse
If your Future Financial Responsibility coverage lapses at any time during the required period, your driver license may be suspended until you re-establish proof.
Your insurance company must notify MVD if your policy cancels or lapses. Once notified, MVD may suspend your driving privileges immediately.
Re-establishing after a Lapse
If your coverage lapses:
Contact your insurance company immediately to reinstate or obtain new SR-22 coverage. Your insurance company will electronically file the new proof with MVD. Pay the $10 suspension fee online at AZMVDNow.gov or at any MVD or Third Party office.
Ending your Requirement
When you've completed your required time period, MVD will automatically remove the requirement. You don't need to take any action.
Your insurance company may continue filing SR-22 proof even after MVD removes the requirement. Contact your insurance company directly to cancel SR-22 filing once your requirement ends.
Note: The Division may release a person from an SR-22 requirement if a person is no longer a resident or has never been a resident of this state. Judgments are not eligible for the out of state waiver.
