Adopt a Highway: Register early for ADOT cleanup on National CleanUp Day

We are ready!  Register here for ADOT’s 7th annual National CleanUp Day event on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.

As summer makes its grand entrance, what better time to look ahead to cooler weather and plan a volunteer cleanup. We’re doing just that by inviting early registration to participate in this year's event.

ADOT welcomes all active volunteer groups to participate and civic-minded individuals, families, religious groups, clubs or others wanting to pitch-in.

Here are the ways you can participate:

  • Volunteer groups with an active permit register to notify ADOT of the intent to clean their adopted segment(s) on Sept. 21, National CleanUp Day. Easy peasy.
  • Those interested in a one-day permit register by Friday, Sept. 6 to receive assistance applying for a permit. We’ll try our best to find a location for your group to tidy up on cleanup day. Highway segments are usually one mile in each direction and largely in rural areas that are deemed safe for volunteers.

One-day permit holders may have an option to extend the permit for two years after the Sept. 21 event. Please note that an extended permit may be located in a different area than the original one-day permit granted. We will do our best to help groups find an adoptable segment to clean several times a year during the two-year permit period.

When a group commits to a two-year permit and officially reports the first clean up to ADOT, recognition signs in the group’s name are ordered and installed at each end of the adopted mile.

The Adopt a Highway team plans to visit as many volunteer groups as logistics allow on National CleanUp Day. If your volunteer segment is situated along our route, we will contact you before Sept. 21 to coordinate an on-site visit.

Thank you for considering National CleanUp Day as an opportunity to join the Adopt a Highway Volunteer Program and help reduce litter along state highways.
