Celebrate independence and designated drivers

A digital message board on the highway encourages motorists to designate a driver.

Whether you’re celebrating the Fourth of July holiday with hot dogs and barbecue, attending a fireworks show or spending time with family and friends, we want to remind Arizonans to designate a driver or have a game plan of how you’re getting home after the festivities are over.

Calling a rideshare or phoning a friend are also great options. We want you to have a fun and safe holiday weekend. If you’re out on the highways on July 4, you may notice some of our overhead message signs displaying a message encouraging drivers to designate a driver. We hope these messages help start conversations around safe driving practices and ultimately lead to drivers making better decisions behind the wheel.

Throughout the state this weekend, you’ll also notice overhead boards displaying a wildfire prevention message that reminds drivers to not drag chains. It’s on all of us to help prevent our vehicles from sparking a wildfire. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, avoid parking on tall and dry brush, do not throw a cigarette out of your car window.

If you’re hitting the roads for a trip out of town, make sure you pack an emergency travel kit that includes lots of water, healthy snacks, an umbrella (for shade and potential rain), prescription medication, a flashlight and a fully-charged cell phone. Unexpected delays due to your car breaking down, crashes, road closures or wildfires can occur, and it’s important to have the essentials on-hand so you’re prepared.

Check your vehicle’s tire pressure, engine, windshield wipers and fluid levels before you head out. And plan your route in advance.
