Working as a member of the ADOT Incident Response Unit, sponsored by GEICO, means showing up to unique incidents on Valley freeways. Not every day is predictable.

When crashes occur, IRU members will set up traffic control, using cones or their trucks to give responders a place to work and direct motorists around an incident, and help move vehicles out of travel lanes. IRU also assists other agencies with active incidents on the highway as needed.

For example, an IRU member in the video below used his truck to block the right lane on State Route 347 so fire crews would have enough space to safely extinguish a vehicle fire and traffic could continue moving in the left lane.

Other times, unsecured items or debris will end up on the freeways and it falls on IRU (or law enforcement) to remove the hazardous items.

ADOT’s IRU crews wear a lot of different (hard) hats, but they are driven to help reduce crashes and get you to your destination.
