From the Director: Let's all be role models for new drivers and avoid distractions

An urban freeway at night.

I know you’ve seen the driver talking on their phone, texting, or eating in the car. It’s all distractions that can lead to crashes and even death, which are all preventable.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and it’s a great time to remind everyone to not drive distracted.

In 2022 in Arizona, there were 57 fatalities in crashes attributed to distracted driving. That same year, there were 8,988 crashes on Arizona roadways attributed to distracted driving based on statewide crash reports collected by ADOT.

I’d like to remind everyone that the use of devices such as cell phones and tablets while driving is banned in Arizona. Under Arizona’s hands-free law, drivers can be subject to civil penalties and fines.

If you have a young or new driver in the family, I encourage you to be the role model behind the wheel and keep your eyes on the road. Avoid distractions. You are sending a message how important safety is to you and your passengers, as well as to other drivers on the road.

Let’s all work together to ensure we all get home to our loved ones safely each and every day. Avoid driving distracted – that phone call or text message can wait!
