Earth Day with Adopt a Highway: If you’ve got the time, we’ve got bags

Please join us for ADOT’s Earth Day and Arizona Volunteer Week cleanup near Tempe Marketplace from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 22.
Register here if you’d like to participate in a special Adopt a Highway Volunteer Program cleanup to reduce roadside trash that clogs storm drains and waterways. We’ll supply the trash bags, safety vests and safety training. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, and those 12-18 must also be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you are new to trash cleanups, this one-day event is an opportunity to learn what volunteer cleanups are all about. You may find yourself walking alongside other civic-minded individuals and longtime volunteers who come back time and again to help keep Arizona grand.
In 2024, more than 7,600 volunteers filled 10,000 trash bags to help reduce litter along state highways. We’ve got lots of adoptable miles available for individuals interested in forming groups of their own. We issue two-year permits, usually a mile in each direction in areas that are deemed safe for volunteers. ADOT will install a recognition sign on your adopted mile after your first cleanup.
Even if Adopt a Highway doesn't work for you right now, everyone can help by keeping a litter bag in their vehicle and securing loads so litter and larger items don't blow onto roadways.
