Enhancing pedestrian and bicyclist connectivity in the region

Bridge trusses are constructed above a highway.

When out on a leisurely walk, run or bicycle ride, we all want the piece of mind that we’ll have safe spaces to walk, run and ride our bikes in and ADOT gets that. That’s why one of the main goals of the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project is to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist connectivity within the project area. Here’s a quick look at how the project is striving to reach that goal.

A total of two new multiuse bridges are being constructed over I-10. One is located at Alameda Drive and the other one is located near the Western Canal, close to the Arizona Mills mall. Additionally, the Guadalupe Road bridge over I-10 has been widened by 11 feet so that pedestrians, bicyclists and equestrians can safely cross the freeway. Widening the Guadalupe Road bridge also enhances access to the Sun Circle Trail which is a popular 300 mile loop trail that winds through the Phoenix area and is often used by outdoor enthusiasts.

As of Fall 2023, the bridge trusses for the new Alameda Drive and Western Canal bridges have been placed over I-10. Additional trusses for both bridges will also be placed over the new Collector Distributor or CD roads that are being constructed alongside I-10, before these bridges open up to the public.
