Get ahead of summer and prep your vehicle for extreme heat conditions

It’s that time of year again.

Arizonans bid farewell to the last of the cooler weather and say hello to the scorching heat of the desert summer. In recognition of Heat Awareness Week (May 5-9), we want to encourage drivers to prepare their vehicles now for extreme heat conditions so they’re ready for the summer.

We regularly experience 100-degree days and it’s risky to be exposed to those temperatures. Your car breaking down in extreme heat can be dangerous, especially if you need to make repairs, such as fixing a flat tire, which causes exertion. So, before you head out on the roads, it’s important to check that your vehicle is in good working order.

  • Fill up your gas tank and try to keep it about three-quarters full.
  • Make sure your vehicle’s A/C is working.
  • Test your vehicle’s battery and ensure it is up to par.
  • Top off coolant levels if needed.
  • Check your tire pressure to reduce the chances of a blowout.

Perhaps you’re considering a road trip to northern Arizona, where it’s a little cooler. But even the best of plans can have an unexpected twist. An unplanned highway closure, a crash that slows traffic or a brush fire could cause delays. That’s why it’s important to pack an emergency kit before you head out so you have resources until you can make it to your destination or help can arrive. Consider bringing:

  • Extra water
  • Healthy snacks
  • Fully charged cell phone and battery charger
  • First aid kit
  • Sun protection (sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, etc.)
  • Prescription medication
  • Flashlight and batteries
