A digital message board on the highway encourages motorists to slow down in work zones.

If you’re out on Arizona highways this week, you may notice overhead message boards displaying a message encouraging drivers to slow down in work zones.

That’s because Work Zone Awareness Week runs from April 20-24, and it’s the perfect opportunity to remind drivers to slow down and pay attention in work zones so we can all get home safely.

According to preliminary data, there were 16 fatalities and 36 serious injuries in work zone-related crashes on all Arizona roads in 2025. And national statistics show that nearly 80% of work zone fatalities were drivers and their passengers.

Lives are on the line in these work zones. And crashes don’t just happen. They’re the result of choices because There’s No Such Thing As Accidents. We hope these messages help start important conversations about traffic safety and ultimately influence drivers to make better decisions behind the wheel.

Slow down, stay alert and keep yourselves and workers safe in work zones.
