Crash Responder Safety Week is a big deal here at ADOT. In the Phoenix area, ADOT fields an Incident Response Unit, sponsored by GEICO, that patrols freeways to assist motorists and coordinate with fellow responders after crashes and other incidents. That's in addition to ADOT personnel who assist at crash scenes and closures across the state.

To discuss the importance of Crash Responder Safety Week, this week's episode of On the Road With ADOT features Luis Venegas, supervisor of our Incident Response Unit. His team coordinates with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and other responders to remove debris, clear lanes and reduce the possibility of secondary crashes that happen when traffic slows for a freeway incident.

Luis chats with host Doug Nintzel about the white-knuckle experience of working next to speeding traffic and why it's so important to follow Arizona's law requiring motorists to slow down and move over for responders along highways.

"When you see our lights, move over or slow down," Luis says. "We need the room to work. It just makes it safer for everyone."
