As if on cue, given the subject I'm writing about, my cellphone pinged this morning with the threat shown above from the Arizona State Department of Vehicles(DMV). Someone, somewhere was once trying to scare me into handing over personal information and money. They're pretending to be a government agency -- a nonexistent one in this case -- and demanding immediate action over an outstanding traffic ticket, among the potentially plausible crises that scammers will use.
That's why I'm lucky to have spent time in the One Road With ADOT studio with Capt. Brian Eckenboy of our Office of Inspector General and Fraud Hotline. In this week's episiode, he joins host Doug Nintzel and me to discuss this kind of fraud and what you can do about it.
Investing 15 minutes will help you protect yourself and your family against this scam and so many others like it that arrive via text message, email, regular mail and even phone calls. I learned a great deal from Captain Eckenboy, who has an extensive background in fraud investigations.
