It might be difficult to imagine Phoenix without the Deck Park Tunnel, but that was the case until 35 years ago. This episode of On the Road With ADOT celebrates a milestone anniversary by talking with someone who witnessed the Herculean efforts needed to complete the tunnel and Interstate 10's Final Mile.

As ADOT's Valley Freeways Communications Manager, Mark Bonan was there on Aug. 10, 1990, when the tunnel opened after three days of celebrations. It was the culmination of many ADOT projects needed to bring I-10 through the downtown Phoenix area. This was the last stretch of the interstate to open to traffic, completing 2,460 miles across eight states, between Santa Monica, California, and Jacksonville, Florida.

This ADOT news release has more details about the anniversary. You can learn even more by listening to Mark visit with host Doug Nintzel, who was there as well in 1990 as a radio journalist.
