Protect yourself and get a registration refund when selling a vehicle

Are you planning to sell, trade or even donate your vehicle? Want to get the extra cash for a new toy, or just reduce the number of vehicles in your driveway? MVD has some great tips to follow when selling a vehicle.
The biggest tip is to inform the MVD when the vehicle is no longer yours by filling out a sold notice and requesting a credit on that vehicle’s registration. A sold notice can protect you from future issues involving that vehicle.
The sold notice tells the MVD that you are no longer the owner of the vehicle even if the new owner has not transferred the registration to their name yet. That information is updated in the system, so law enforcement agencies are aware when dealing with a vehicle that may be involved in a collision, crime or even abandoned on the side of a road.
By completing a sold notice, you will remove your name as the owner of record for the vehicle and take off any future responsibilities for that vehicle.
The form is easy to fill out. You can complete a sold notice online at AZMVDNOW.gov, at any MVD office or many Authorized Third Party locations.
Once you have completed the sold notice, you will also want to request a registration credit and possibly get some of the vehicle registration refunded.
The amount of credit is based on when the vehicle registration expires, so waiting reduces the amount.
So after signing the title over to the new owner, be sure to immediately inform the MVD through a sold notice. And don’t forget to request a registration credit if you want to get some of that money back.
